Chemical properties :

White crystalline powder. Melting point 194-196°C. It is soluble inacetone, slightly soluble in ethanol orchloroform, and almost insoluble in water. It is soluble in dilutesodium hydroxide solution and almost insoluble in dilute acid. Odorless, slightly bitter taste.

Uses: used to treat gout, chronic rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases

Probenecid inhibits the active reabsorption of urate in the proximal tubules, increases the excretion of urate and reduces the concentration of urate in the blood. It can alleviate or prevent the formation of urate nodules, reduce joint damage, and promote the dissolution of formed urate. No anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. It can competitively inhibit the secretion of weak organic acids in the renal tubules, so it can increase the blood concentration of these antibiotics and prolong their action time.
